Bristlecone NYLT is a week-long outdoor leadership training program conducted by Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Its purpose is to provide youth leaders with a meaningful experience in Scouting that will enhance their knowledge and create a deeper understanding of their roles and responsibilities as leaders. It is intended to supplement the Junior Leader Trainings provided in the Scouts' home units, and parallels Wood Badge, the adult version of the course.

The course centers around the concepts of:

  • What a leader must BE
  • What a leader must KNOW
  • What a leader must DO
The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO.

This course emphasizes immediate use of new skills and ideas in a fun environment. At the course, interconnecting concepts and techniques are introduced early, then built upon for the rest of the week.

We go into detail about visualizing success, setting goals to accomplish this vision, and developing plans. Using a mixture of lecture-style instruction and games/activities to help Scouts with different learning styles understand the material, we present on:

  • Leading yourself
  • Communicating well
  • Developing a team
  • Different forms of leadership
  • Stages of team development
  • Teaching skills to others
  • And much more...
